Chinese Ho Ho Bird – £88
Description
A fabulous 20th Century Chinese HoHo bird figurine which would add a great pop of colour on a mantlepiece.
The bird is well modelled and glazed in turquoise with a manganese crest and base and a clear yellow glazed beak. The base also features peony flowers left with clear glaze to show the natural off-white clay. The Ho Ho bird, also known as Hō-ō, originates from the mythical Japanese version of the Phoenix. This mysterious creature features a long beak, curving neck, flowing tail, claws, and a crest. Interestingly, it goes by various names, including hoo, foo, ho-wo, hobo, howo, ho, and even sacred river. In Asian decorative art, the Ho Ho bird symbolizes good fortune, longevity, fidelity, and wisdom. It’s often depicted as an amalgamation of several birds, including the phoenix, pheasant, stork, heron, and bird of paradise.
It’s bird body and base are in great condition but the top part of the beak has been very well repaired and it is very hard to see the join so it really does not detract from a really lovely figure.
