Herend Rothschild Birds Sugar Bowl – £110

Tableware

Description

A lovely porcelain Herend sugar bowl with yellow rose handle on the top with a gilt edge in the well known Rothschild Birds pattern.

One of Herends best known patterns since 1861 it takes its name from the Rothschild family. The main elements in the design are two birds sitting in tree branches with a golden necklace (there are twelve variants of the couple of birds and versions without the necklace) and dainty pastel-coloured butterflies and bugs are scattered around the bird compositions.

The design comes from the legend that one day Baroness Rothschild lost a valuable necklace. She charged her maid with the theft but then one day as she was walking in the garden she saw songbirds in a tree and near them she saw the lost necklace. Mor Fischer, owner of the Herend factory heard this story and he designed this famous decorative pattern in its memory.
