SOLD – Pair of Antique Handpainted Limoges Dishes

Decorative Objects

Description

A stunning pair of handpainted leaf shaped Limoges porcelain dishes by the renowned French manufacturer Haviland & Co.

Haviland & Co was founded in 1842 by two American brothers David and Daniel, who travelled from the USA and settled in Limoges France. Originally supplying decorative china to the American market they started by purchasing whiteware blanks from other Limoges porcelain factories and getting it decorated by French Artisans. In 1865 David Haviland purchased his own factory and revolutionized the industry in Limoges by making and decorating it in one location. They used the most skilled designers, painters and sculptors of their time including well known names such as Gauguin, Kandinsky and Dali.

This rare and lovely pair of dishes have a moulded shape and soft mat gold edges and are beautifully handpainted with leaves, pomegranates and chestnuts. Each dish has a different design. There is another smaller pair and a larger dish available in the same design. See other listings, a discount will be given if the set is purchased together.

The undersides are decorated with the Manufacturers and Decorators mark indicating that this pair was made around 1887.
