Japanese Imari Vase – £295
Description
A really beautiful Japanese Imari porcelain vase from the Meiji period (late 19th century). It has a long garlic neck above a globular body and is decorated with four main panels, two featuring birds in trees and two with boats and fishing scenes. It has a lovely a red background and also features smaller decorations of flowers and butterflies.
The Imari name is derived from the port of Imari, where this porcelain was shipped to Nagasaki. In Nagasaki the Dutch East India Company and the Chinese had trading outposts where the porcelain was sold and exported.
The vase is marked on the base as Zoshuntei Sanpo zo 蔵春亭三保造 which is a brand of Imari porcelain in the Ko-Imari style created by Hisatomi Yoshibe in the Arita region. Exports of this kind to the West began in the mid 17th century but was most popular in the West during the Meiji period (late 19th century).
