SOLD Antique Celery Vase
Description
A particularly beautiful Victorian celery vase with a fabulous etched flower design and decorative rim. It can be used for its intended purpose or it makes for a lovely vase.
Celery was first introduced to England from the Mediterranean in the early 19th century. Farmers began cultivating celery in eastern England and as it was a difficult crop to grow, it became a luxury food item. As a result, upper and middle class Victorian households would display their raw celery in special vases. Glass vases were the most popular so the celery could be seen in the vase by diners and they were usually displayed as dining table centerpieces.
